Koch Makes Room in his New Cellar

The anti-fraud campaigner is auctioning off a vast treasury of fine wine in May.

When it comes to fighting fraud, billionaire Bill Koch wears a hat that is even whiter than his full head of hair.

When it comes to collecting – whether it is modern art (Botero sculptures greet visitors to his Florida mansion) or wine – he does so with a passion. Now, after almost 40 years of accumulating a cellar that would be the envy of any collector, the entrepreneur and philanthropist is trimming his holdings.

The man who won the 1992 America’s Cup Yacht Race has picked Sotheby’s to auction off about half of his wine collection over three days in May.

The offerings will include 10 bottles of 1945 Château Mouton Rothschild; 11 bottles of the same legendary vintage from Latour; jeroboams and methuselahs of DRC Romanée-Conti, balthasars of La Tâche, DRC and Montrachet DRC.
